There was a report on the news recently about a local dog who tested positive for heartworms even though he was on preventative. There is a strain of resistant heartworms. It is very uncommon. We have not seen any cases. Most heartworms are still sensitive to the preventatives.
We recommend to give monthly heartworm preventative year round. For added protection, you can use mosquito repellant. Here are a couple that are available:
